I don't understand things and this is why I'm not...
budsey: I andgoodbye: I had a bond for $100 that I cashed after 20 years, because apparently it stopped accumulating interest at that point. Because the economy sucks, after 20 years all I got was $31 in interest. That didn’t seem very worthwhile on its own, but now I’m being taxed for $81 of it. $81 out of $131 leaves $50. So by loaning $100 to the government (I got a C in econ; that’s what...

You know you're a nerd when...
you have a crush and look him up on j-stor. (I also think that this is proof that as much as I try to deny it now, there is a PhD in my future.)

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
Saturday Night in the Life of a Grad Student: Reading Satanic Verses with hot chocolate. Remember when I used to be fun?
Jan 23rd
This semester I’m doing a semi-independent study (there are three of us taking the class… basically, we go to a different restaurant in Charleston every week with our favorite professor and talk about books over lunch) on banned and censored books. Our first selection is Salman Rusdie’s Satanic Verses, the novel that caused the Ayatollah of Iran to put a fatwa on Rushdie because...

“Awkwardness visiting the students at their homes during the last week of classes...”

I am teaching a freshman comp class this semester at C of C. Today we were doing one an icebreaker type thing where you introduce someone else in the class. Most people say things like “This is Fred and he’s from Montana. He has three dogs and likes the color yellow.” One group, though, was a little more creative: Girl #1: This is ____. She’s from Florence. She’s an...

“Everyone thinks I hate them, but it’s just nursing school!”
– Susan on her social life after college (via budsey) Ha. So true for life in grad school. Also a fitting post for my last first day of grad school.

So there’s a marathon of Felicity (the terrible/awesome WB show from the 90s) on TV right now. In watching the first four episodes, I’ve realized two things: 1. College/life would be really awkward without a cell phone. Felicity keeps using pay phones. Do those even exist anymore? 2. Felicity is a creepy stalker. 3. I really don’t want to start classes tomorrow.

This is not the recipe for sangria
budsey: andgoodbye: Raspberry lemonade Cheap pinot grigio Orange slices Some friends (KATIE, there clearly needs to be an @ function on here) and I once bought a nice-looking bottle of sangria, but it turned out to be pink wine and fruit juice…. I think. Very, very bad. This drink sounds kind of good, though. Ugh. That stuff was disgusting. That recipe sounds infinitely better.

New Year's Resolution Time!
I’m stealing my (nerdy) New Year’s resolution from my friends Travis and Tom. They’ve both decided to read 52 books over the course of the year. It’s kind of cheating for me, since I’m in graduate school for English and will likely read 52 books before the semester is over, but I think it will be fun to keep track of what I read over the year. The Rules: 1. This test...
